Woot! I finally got Ruby, Rails and MySQL running again on Snow Leopard! I would like to say I accomplished this by fully understanding the issues at hand and configuring everything properly myself, but instead I stumbled across a Ruby one-click-installer while looking for help. (MySQL wasn't really a problem once I got the right version, but I couldn't get Ruby to compile - it kept having issues with Readline.)

TextMate, I missed you, although I have to say, gedit is a pretty capable substitute once you tweak a few things.

You may also notice that there's been an update to the archive.

I love "Welcome to Revision 1692, up from 1585. This is a small release..." Only 100+ revisions, 3 new database tables, a dozen or so new pages and a redesigned home page, along with some significant bug fixes, new features and CSS tweaks. I think our sense of scale changed somewhere along the line. *g*

I've been thinking about this whole "interactive storytelling" thing TV's trying these days, and the difference, for some shows, between what it says on the label and what's actually in the can. ( Behind the cut-tag: Heroes, Castle, and Supernatural, discussed in a context that's only tangentially related to Marshall McLuhan. (NO WAIT DON'T--okay, I probably shouldn't have mentioned him, I see that now.) No spoilers for unaired episodes. )

A second still for Invictus has been released as part of a LA Times story on film-making in South Africa. Meanwhile, South African group Overtone recorded all songs for the trailer and have recorded eight songs for the film.



Opening next month will be Clint Eastwood's "Invictus," a historical drama about the upset win by South Africa in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which helped unite blacks and whites during the crucial early months of Nelson Mandela's presidency. It stars Morgan Freeman as Mandela and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the team captain.

In an interview, one of the film's producers, Lori McCreary, who also co-produced the 1993 South Africa-set film "Bopha!" -- which her Revelations Entertainment production company partner Freeman directed -- called the country "a great place to make films." Among the factors she cited were a favorable currency exchange rate, a variety of arresting shooting locations and one of Africa's deepest pools of talent. More than 200 of the 240 crew members and 62 of 70 actors who worked on "Invictus" were South African, she added.

"The U.S. is more interested in South Africa than at any point probably since the '94 election," McCreary said. "The world is looking at South Africa." As for the coincidences of timing and subject matter between "Invictus" and this summer's World Cup, she said, "I wish I could say it was planned. I think it's fortuitous for us."

Bourne again! Get ready! Universal Pictures are planning to shoot two more Bourne films back to back next year.

Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum were named the equal second best films of the decade at The Times (UK).

I hear my laptop's fan spinning up (something it usually reserves for Logic or FCE).

The age-old question: so, is it taking a long time to run because it's an infinite loop, or because the file is large? But it shouldn't be taking *that* long...maybe I should shuck in a debugging "print" statement here and there so I know where the program is.

(No, this is not the festivids matching script, which will be in Tcl. This is an alternate script for collating the nominations in Python.)

ETA: Infinite loop. *bonks self on head* I should have seen that!

ETA #2: And that's the second time I've forgotten to increment a counter variable. Geez, am I out of practice. But at least they're easy bugs to catch!
